Born in the middle of New Tork City's worst storm of the winter season, Isabella Seneca, was born to Georgia Clarkson at 3:33 A.M. At 8:49 A.M. the same morning, Chili Griffith received a call from Child Services and Patient Relations from Promise Hospital Center in the medical center of the city. He was informed that his wife, had left the hospital without their daughter, and was warned that if she or he did not come to claim her, she would be put into the system. A day later, Isabella was brought home to the one bedroom dwelling in the basement of his brother Cilan's condo that he already shared with his two year old son, Jeremy.
When Isabella was four, she, Jeremy and Chili went to Opelucid City to meet Adonis, the new son of Champion Iris, an old friend of her Uncle Cilan, and her beau Benga. Late spring snows were common in Opelucid, and Isabella had her very first encounter with snow during their stay at Iris' villa. During their stay, Iris' best friend Georgia and her husband Shamus paid a visit to the first time mother. Jeremy and Bella, excited to meet a Elite Four Member for Unova, were none the wiser as they interacted with their mother for the very first time, and neither noticed the cold exchanges of pleasantries between their father and the Ice Type Master. After meeting Georgia's Beartic, Isabella became infatuated with Ice Types. It wasn't until much, much later that Chili explained to Jeremy and Isabella that Georgia was in fact their mother. That conversation didn't go well.
That same winter, the park close to their apartments announced that they would be opening an ice rink on park grounds. After much begging, Chili took Jeremy and Isabella on opening day and watched as they stumbled about on the ice. About twenty minutes later, Isabella was skating circles around everyone else on the rink. When they were packing up to head home, an ice instructor pulled Chili aside and pointed out how Bella showed promise in ice skating and at the time, Chili had a good job and was able to support her classes, and in the dream of competitive ice skating that came with them. For three years Isabella practiced and competed happily, and quickly rose in the skating community.
When she was eight years old, Chili lost his job and couldn't afford her lessons, so he stopped encouraging her. She was absolutely miserable, being unable to skate. Isabella wasn't able to set foot on ice for months until winter of that year. The pool of their apartment complex had frozen over, and while Jeremy was supposed to be watching her for the day, she and Simisear headed to the pool. In her excitement, Isabella didn't stop to consider if the ice was safe or not. Later into the morning, when Jeremy goes out to look for her and Simisear, he finds her and Simisear happily skating. He manages to convince her to come inside for breakfast, but before Isabella can skate to the edge, the ice beneath her breaks and she becomes trapped under. Jeremy rushes in to save her, and pulls her out of the pool.. She spends the whole day in the hospital while being treated for Hypothermia, and has to listen while Chili fights with a local Jenny on her decision to call CPS. While she's in the hospital, Chili sells her skates at a local pawn shop, which felt like a punishment to her.
When she turns ten and gains her trainer's license, Isabella sets off on her journey and makes her way to Georgia's estate across the city. Her father Shamus is the one to open the door when she arrives, once inside, Isabella recounts their first meeting to Georgia, and explains her dream of skating. At first, to Bella, it seems that Georgia and Shamus are very supportive of her dream, and even though something in her tells her not to, Isabella reveals that she knows of their familial bond and asks if they will sponsor her while she trains. Shamus, who had no previous knowledge of any of his wife's other children, curtly ends the conversation and un-politely asks that Bella leave. She is heartbroken as she walks to the nearest Pokémon Center in the rain.
With no money, no sponsor and no hope, Isabella cries herself to sleep. Later into the night, she wakes and is unable to fall asleep again, at a loss she turns on the tv and happens to catch the ending to a Kalosi Ice Skating Competition. By the time the credits roll, Bella comes to the decision to travel to Kalos and make her own way. The very next morning, Isabella pawns her only item of value, a golden locket with her father and Jeremy inside, it's enough money for a plane ticket to Snowbelle City, Kalos.
While training in Snowbelle, Isabella works at a small restaurant lodge to pay for her equipment and board in the apartments above the restaurant. She catches her Swinub while in Snowbelle.
One day, on her off day, Isabella spends hours on the lake just outside of Snowbelle and is startled when she realizes that she is being watched by a woman she's never seen before. Before she is able to call out, she watches as the woman leaves. A week later, the woman returns and reveals herself to be Verá Wulftytär, the daughter of Snowbelle City's Gym Leader, Wulfric. While she is commenting on Bella's talent, Verá skates with her to get the full feel of her potential and previous training. Once they sit down to take a break, Verá asks if she will be entering the upcoming competition in Anistar City. After she gets no response, she asks Bella if she would be open to having dinner.
Soon after finding out about Bella's situation, Verá offers to coach her, which Bella tearfully declines due to being unable to afford a coach. Verá however, refuses to take no for an answer and takes Isabella back to her home. It's there that Bella meets Wulfric and Drasna, Verá's parents. With some convincing, Bella moves into their empty room and is accepted as a member of their family.
After meeting Verá, the native Snowbell gives Bella proper, traditional Saámi clothing that both protects her from the elements and helps Bella immerse herself into Snowbelle culture.
When she was 6, at a skating competition, a mother for her skating group brought cherry pie. A few minutes after finishing her slice, Isabella broke out into hives all along her body and had to be rushed to the hospital. She stayed in the hospital for two days recovering from anaphylactic shock, and was unable to retreive her second place prize until her next training session with her group.
Isabella now carries an epipen with her in her bag just in case she comes into contact with her allergen again.

Isabella, terrified of another familial rejection, puts off trying to meet Paul until she and Verá unexpectedly run into him and his family for one of his daughter's performances. With Shamus still fresh in her mind, she hesitates, and is caught off guard by Paul's gentle demeanor with her. He notes that she, in fact, does look like his younger brother, and jokes that she would not like him very much.
Paul makes an offer to sponsor her, and his husband Ash also agrees to make her costumes for her. He also makes a great, public effort to get to know his niece and goes to all of her competitions. When asked why, he simply tells her that she reminds him of his daughter, and will always have a place in his home if she ever needs it.
