It is there, in that tiny, underfunded fire station that Captain Treen Matthews connects with, and names the baby girl Annabelle Hope after his mother. He never sees her again.
Four months into life, Dame Lorelai Armacost is matched with Annabelle after applying once again to foster a child. Lorelai is of small stature, with raven black hair that falls in heavy curls past her shoulders. Unable to have her own, she chose to foster and loves every child as her own, Annabelle is Lorelai's sixth and final child. The next six years the two spend together are the happiest years of Annabelle's life, even though she can only remember two of them.
As Lorelai spends more time caring for Anna, and grows more aware of her aging, she does something she had never once considered before. Lorelai and her attorneys gather the proper paperwork and without telling Anna, she applies for adoption. Sometime within the timeframe of July and September of 2025, Lorelai contracts an unknown disease. Afraid that her case might not go through the system fast enough, Lorelai writes her first and final draft of her will with her attorneys as witnesses. In December, on Christmas Day, Lorelai succumbs to her disease, leaving Annabelle as her sole inheritant to all of her her assets and to her brownstone in downtown New Tork. Unfortunately, after her death, Annabelle is taken back into the fostercare system with no knowledge of the will.
From the ages of six to nine years old, Annabelle, in her grief is unable to connect to another family and begins to rebel. She begins to run away often, and is always very swiftly returned to the long care facility for foster kids. She also is able to recognize which families have the least interest of her well-being at heart and does everything she can to ensure they remain unpaid for her time with them. This time is also when Anna begins to associate with local gangs and has regular run-ins with a then rookie cop, Daniela Jenny. Officer Jenny does her best to make sure that Anna is always safe, fed and taken care of but knows she can only help so much. Despite this, she becomes a reliable figure in Anna's life, and continues to keep contact with her even after Anna is taken in by Chili Griffith, who is caring for Anna's other half-siblings.
While Annabelle would have rather not be taken to another house, when she is told that Chili has actual biological siblings of hers, she is intrigued and relents. Her first week into living with Chili is one of the most stressful weeks of her life, as it's the longest she's ever stayed in a place that wasn't the police station or Lorelai's. She is also very uncomfortable with Chili's attempts to establish familiarity, and with her older half-brother Jeremy, who doesn't particulary are to get along with her. Her younger half-sister Isabella, or "Izzy" for short, eagerly attaches herself to Anna in her excitement to have a sister. The two form a very deep and close bond within the months following.
About four months into living with her new family, Chili informs her and her social worker that he does intend on officially adopting Anna, much to her delight. Though when their actual court date does come up, Izzy drowns in the complex pool and is rushed to the hospital. Upon hearing that Chili left his other two children alone at home, the Judge overseeing the case denies Chili's request and motions that Annabelle be taken back into the system. When she realizes that she is going to be taken away again, Anna nearly knocks out a court officer on her way up to the bench and begs for him to let her stay with Chili. Two broken noses later, the Judge begrudingly agrees to allow her to stay on the condition that her caseworker make semi-monthly, unscheduled visits to ensure Anna is being taken care of.
A few years later, when Izzy has a huge fight with Chili, Anna helps Izzy pack her bags and helps her run away, even though she knows she will miss Izzy. She later covers for Izzy when Chili returns home to find her gone, and although Chili figures out soon that Izzy won't be coming home, Anna waits until she is safely in Kalos to tell him.
In May of 2035, after years of applying for appeals, Chili is finally able to secure a court appointment and on the 17th, Annabelle is officially adopted by Chili. A month after this, Chili makes the announcement that he has, once again, quit his job and will be opening his own diner in Castelia City. After a tearful goodbye with Jenny and with Lorelai's grave, Annabelle embraces the move to Castelia ready for a fresh start. While in Castelia City, she meets the rising star Sterling Fontaine and gains her as a friend very quickly. The two grow as close as sisters, both completely unaware of their actual genetic link.
A swift two years after moving to Castelia, Anna has gone through two whirlwind romances, discovered who her paternal father is and attained her GED. Needing a change of pace, Annabelle moves back to New Tork City to enroll into Police Academy, and stays with her old friend Daniela Jenny. While she is studying, she and Jenny also dive deep into Lorelai Armacost's history and discovers that she has living kin in Galar. With the intention to rent out Lorelai's brownstone, Anna leaves on winter break to Galar with her biggest dream in her heart.
Her inital meeting with Lorelai's kin, Bede Westford is far more emotional than she expected it to be, with Bede explaining to her what had happened after Lorelai's death. After hearing her proposal, Bede then returns with her to Unova to work out their deal and help go through his sister's remaining belongings as the house was never touched after her death. It is there that the two discover her will. Since Bede has no interest in a home so far away from his own, he agrees to the terms of the will. After a short appointment in court, and signing away all legal rights to his sister's estate, Bede returns to Ballonlea.
A week into moving back into her home, Annabelle files to change her name to the one she had been dreaming of for years. Eight weeks after, she receives a letter stating that her change of identity was successful. She is thereafter known as Annabelle Hope Armacost.
Due to Anna's past in both foster homes and in community care homes, Anna has experienced hunger and neglect, along with physical abuse by both staff and other children. Due to this, Anna has never stayed in one place for longer than a few months to a year, she feels that she cannot trust anyone and is quick to leave when things get tough. Between foster homes, Anna would sometimes run away and live in the streets or within homeless camps, and has found very few true friends she can rely on. Due to this Anna struggles with the following. :
